The Private Last Dance — Why Have One At Your Wedding

Here’s a wedding day trend that’s been flying under the radar but gained more popularity in the past few years. As a wedding photographer, I’ve noticed I have been capturing more of these moments every wedding season. Couples are also excited to add it to their day when I propose it during our first meetings. It’s the private last dance, some call in the secret last dance or the sweetheart dance.

What is a private last dance?

The name pretty much says it all. It’s the last dance on your wedding day, but all the guests have left the venue. It’s just you and your partner, your DJ, and the photographer. The idea is simple, it doesn’t take much to organize, the photos always look amazing and couples love having a final moment for themselves at the end of the day. Your guests aren’t gone, as in they’ve left. They’ll be waiting for you outside and setting up your grand exit send-off!

Why should I have one at my wedding?

One thing that worries couples during planning is not having enough private time on their wedding day. A private last dance gives you that exactly. After all, this day is all about you and your love, you deserve to at least have a moment or two! A first look is a great idea for a secluded moment at the start of your day. A private last dance is equally good, just at the end of your day. You can slow dance, talk about the highlights of the day, or just say nothing and connect for a minute before you head out.

A private first dance is also a wonderful opportunity for pictures. If you want a diverse wedding gallery that’s full of storytelling moments — a private last dance is perfect for you!

Which song should we play during the private last dance?

I have three suggestions here that you can use to brainstorm and a list of amazing songs for the last song of the night.

  1. Your number two song for your first dance

  2. A song you both love that isn’t a wedding song

  3. A movie or TV show theme song
